Greyhound makes planning your next road trip a breeze, with multiple ways to buy tickets. The company operates routes throughout North America, to major cities and rural destinations, transporting nearly 20 million passengers every year. Greyhound bus fares vary, depending on the amount of scheduling flexibility your trip requires. Regardless of where you plan to roam, you can find a Greyhound bus schedule to meet your travel needs.

Buying a Greyhound Ticket for Yourself

Using a debit or credit card, you can purchase tickets at Greyhound stations, on the Greyhound website or by phone. Independent agents such as select gasoline stations and stores also sell Greyhound tickets. Greyhound locations without a dedicated bus station such as bus stops operated by a local business like a hotel, sell tickets.

When buying tickets in person, you can pay with cash, or with a personal check at Greyhound stations. Passengers who do not have a credit or debit card can make reservations online and pay for their tickets at a Greyhound station, or at 7-Eleven or ACE Cash Express stores.

When purchasing tickets online, you can print your ticket at home, collect it at the Greyhound station or travel with a paperless e-ticket. Greyhound offers a mobile app, available in Android and iOS versions, which enables you to book trips and travel with a paperless e-ticket.

Phone orders incur a $15 fee per transaction and require a debit or credit card. When reserving by phone, you can collect your ticket at the Greyhound station, or receive a printable ticket via email.

Greyhound bus ticket prices vary, with three fare levels: economy, economy extra and flexible. Economy fairs are the cheapest and flexible the most expensive.

Buying Third-Party Greyhound Tickets

Greyhound offers two options for purchasing tickets for other travelers. Gift ticket orders, available online and at Greyhound stations, allow purchasers to have a ticket held at the other passenger's departing bus station.

Prepaid ticket orders enable you to buy a ticket at one station and have it transferred to the origin station of the passenger.

Gift ticket and prepaid ticket orders incur an $18, non-refundable surcharge.

At the Greyhound station, passengers retrieving prepaid or gift tickets must present the confirmation number of the order, along with a photo ID or a password, which the buyer can choose when purchasing tickets.

Greyhound Refund and Exchange Policies

If you buy and economy or economy extra ticket, you can exchange it for a ticket to travel at another time or on another day, but you must choose the same origin and destination stations of the original trip. Your new ticket must follow the same terms as the original ticket. For example, if you pay for an advance purchase fare, you can only exchange your ticket for one that has the same terms.

Exchanging economy and economy extra tickets incur a $20, per ticket surcharge. If you buy a flexible fare ticket, you can exchange it for a different time or date at no charge.

Greyhound will issue refunds only for flexible fare tickets, as long as you have not used the ticket. If you use the first half of a round-trip ticket, you can request a refund only for the unused leg of the trip. You can only request a refund before the travel date on you ticket.

The company does not offer refunds for lost tickets or for passengers who experience travel delays during a Greyhound journey. Greyhound does not make refunds for lower priced tickets. For example, if you purchase a full fare ticket, and later discover that you could have received senior citizen discount, Greyhound will not refund the price difference.

For refunds, you must submit your request in writing via postal mail.

Greyhound Travel Tips

Choose an economy extra or flexible fare to board the bus before economy passengers do. Purchase a flexible fare if your suspect that your plans may change and may require an exchange or refund.

Reduce your travel costs by checking just one bag. All passengers can check one bag free of charge, but must pay $20 each to check additional bags. Greyhound allows all passengers one carry-on bag at no charge.

Greyhound reserves the first row of its buses for elderly and disabled passengers, as well as children traveling alone. If you require special assistance, notify the gate agent to receive priority seating. Buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts and allows service animals onboard.

Greyhound offers discounts for children, students, senior citizens, veterans and active duty service members. Check the Greyhound website for information about discount rates.
